“When Russia enters a country, it usually takes control of strategic sectors. This is called corrosive capital — when a state, through money and investments, subordinates strategic economic sectors in order to later use these tools to influence the political situation in the country,” said Roman Steblivskyi, Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Economic Security Council of Ukraine (ESCU), on LTV.
The company Rich Metals Group, owned by Russian millionaires Dmitry Korzhev and Dmitry Troitsky, mines gold and copper in Georgia. As LTV reports, their business interests also extend to deposits of precious metals in Armenia. Although Ukraine proposed imposing sanctions on Rich Metals Group in 2022, considering their business an instrument of Russian influence in Georgia, the restrictions were never applied.
